Success stories:

Triumph overcomes frustration!

A mature woman with grown children worked as a home aide.  She was unable to read. One of her responsibilities was to go grocery shopping for her client.  In order to shop, she would have to memorize pictures and labels on products.  She always went to the same grocery because she knew the layout of the store and could find items easily.  If she couldn’t find the exact item on the shelf, she would think it was out of stock.  She didn’t realize that the packaging may have changed. She was frustrated and wanted to learn to read!  She came to Warder Literacy Center several nights a week to work with a tutor.  Her children knew she couldn’t read, but her husband didn’t!  He became suspicious about all her secret absences, so she had to confess.  After several years of study, she now supervises home aides and is able to write the long reports required for her job.

Perseverance equals success!

A student was referred from the McKinley Hall treatment program. He was embarrassed when asked to read in a group.  He was a high school graduate, having gone through school in Learning Disability classes, but he couldn’t read.  He tried the military, but he left because he couldn’t read the “stuff”. Finally, he got up the courage and registered to work with a tutor.  Now, five years later, he has a better job, a driver’s license, a library card, checking and savings account, and  is registered to vote. He is able to use a telephone book, a dictionary, read TV Guide, and read menus. He is an active member of his neighborhood association and volunteers at the Warder Literacy Center. He now reads on a high level 5 and continues to make progress with his tutor.
