“Recent studies have shown that adults who read at lower than a second grade level have higher medical costs than their more literate peers.” (Journal of the National Cancer Institute, July 15, 1992)
“Illiteracy is on the increase in the United States: 21-23%, or 40-44 million adults are at the lowest educational functional level (grades 1-4); 25-28%, or 50 million, are at the pre G.E.D. educational functional level (grades 5-8).” (U.S. Department of Education)
13% of all 17-year olds are functionally illiterate. Among minority youth, the figure is 44%.” (National Commission on Excellence in Education)
