I have a child who is having trouble reading. Can you help my child?
CCLC is an organization that provides literacy service to
adults and children. In 2005 the CCLC began a
children's reading program working with school-age
children who are reading at least two levels below
their grade level. One-on-one tutoring with
the child uses the Stevenson Method which uses
associations that children easily identify to learn
pronunciation rules.
What is the difference between the terms Clark County Literacy Coalition and the Warder Literacy Center?
The Warder Literacy Center is the networking and marketing center for the Clark County Literacy Coalition. The Warder Literacy Center is housed in the old Warder Public Library in Springfield. The Clark County Literacy Coalition provides services at the Warder Literacy Center. The services provided at the Warder Literacy Center are
one-on-one tutoring for adults in reading, writing,
math and preparation for GED classes; ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes and tutoring;
; children's one-on-one tutoring in reading using
the Stevenson Method; Bennett Computer Learning Center, computer assisted learning; and the PICK-A-Pack (Parents Increasing Children’s Knowledge) backpack project.
Do you offer free transportation?
We are able to provide free bus passes for students to use to attend tutoring or classes.
What do I have to do to become a student?
Just call 937-323-8617 or stop in at the Warder Literacy Center.
What do I have to do next?
Each new
adult student must attend an orientation and be assessed for learning level. The new student will then complete 8 hours of instruction
on the computer (instruction is provided) to demonstrate their level of commitment before they are assigned a tutor. The new student will meet with their tutor two times a week for 60 to 90
minutes each session. The parents of children
enrolled in the program must attend an
orientation. Their child will be assessed for
a reading level and assigned a tutor. The
parent or a designated guardian must remain in the
building while the child is tutored. The child
will meet twice a week for one hour each session
with their tutor..
How do I become a tutor?
Just call 937-323-8617 or stop in at the Warder Literacy Center.
What do I have to do next?
Each prospective tutor will attend tutor training which covers nine hours of instruction, over
three different sessions. Trainings are
offered in mornings, evenings, or Saturday
sessions. The Student Services Coordinator will match you with a student after you compute tutor training. During training you may decide if you want to work with an ESOL student,
a Basic Lit student, or a child.
I would like to volunteer, but I don’t want to be a tutor.
Just call 937-323-8617. There are many opportunities to volunteer. They include assisting in an ESOL class, preparing mailings, doing data entry, helping as a receptionist and many others. The Volunteer Service Coordinator will help you to find the right place for you.
I see you have computer assisted learning. I would like to be a tutor but I don’t know much about computers.
CCLC helps both tutors and students feel comfortable with computers. We provide one-on-one basic computer training & classes. We do not teach computer programs. We teach basic computer use, the use of learning software, and an introduction to the internet.
