Poor literacy skills are generational. Studies have shown that a child’s ability to grow and learn academically is hindered when a parent’s literacy skills are low. The PICK-A-Pack, (Parents Increasing Children’s Knowledge) project is designed to respond to this challenge. The CCLC provides the children of adult students
and the students who are children, stimulating books and learning materials intended to be a vehicle for adult/child interactive learning. The PICK-a-Pack project encourages adult students to learn with their children at home. Parents learn by reading to their children, and children learn through interaction and reading with their parents. The Clark County Literacy Coalition wishes to invest in the child, the adult, the family, and the community.
Any student at the Warder Literacy Center may borrow a backpack to enjoy with their
family. The contents of the backpacks center on a theme and include children’s books and activities pertinent to that theme.
Students may borrow the backpack for a week, keep the contents to add to their
home library and return the backpack empty to be refilled and borrowed by another family to enjoy. Parents are encouraged to fill out an evaluation that is included in each backpack.
To participate in PICK-A-Pack individuals must be enrolled as students in a program at the Warder Literacy Center.
